Photoshop Training for Digital Artists

Art System Photoshop

Hey everyone, hope you had a good holidays and you're feeling ready to face the world again! I just wanted to share with you a big project I have underway for 2013 - it's a Photoshop training course 100% focused on Photomanipulation techniques. The course has been in development for around 4 years, and is the actual syllabus I use to teach at university level. The success of my students at CCCU has really encouraged me to take this methodology to a wider audience.

So what's it about? It's a short series of courses that covers the following:

1. Core Skills & Compositing

(includes: workspace, doc types, layers, layer masks, adjustment layers, processing, shortcuts, pen tool, selecting stock, compositing complex objects, dealing with hair)

2. 'The Art System'

(includes: visual research, mood-boards, movie poster analysis, composition, rule of thirds, depth of field, producing for print, social art profiles, visual hierachy, colour)

3. Lighting Techniques

(includes: lighting overview, shadows, diffraction, highlights, speculars, catch-lights, ambient colour, reflective colour, light objects: fire, stars, lens flares etc. fantasy lighting, vignettes, foreground 'pop', case studies, 3-point lighting overview)

4. Walkthrough Projects

to be confirmed..

...the software is the easy part

This training course goes against the grain somewhat, as it's not just a massive bundle of walkthroughs - it covers the 'art system' of visual research and composition. All the good stuff that's majorly important, but is never covered by the tutorial sites. Anyone can learn photoshop in a fortnight, but developing visual awareness requires a more specialized skillset.

Got feedback?

This course is being put together based on the work that Ive done with hundreds of students over the past few years, but I'd love to hear from you guys at DA. What would you want from a training package like this, and what do you feel is 'skimmed over' by other training providers?

Look forward to hearing your comments.

Conzz 8-)

Interesting ^^
I have some difficulties sometimes to mix pictures for photomanipulations, in particular when they have different sharpness level and different lighting, try to rebuild the all thing is really difficult and I am probably too soft in the light rendering of my composition.
So I would be very interested by a course like that ^^

You've already mentioned the art aspect and in my experience its this 'fine art' part that every ps course misses. You can be great at a software and still produce eyesores if you have zero understanding of basic art concepts. Then its just hit or miss. Unless you are just artistically gifted.
I wish I could do this offline. Any chance you will ever make this non- virtual? If so, you have your first student!

A plan I had for the future was masterclass sessions, taught within a media suite.. To start, this digital training package has my attention. The fine-art theory is massively important, I agree - so this system uses that element as it's core :)

Shared Conzz :-) Light! I need to know about light and shadows and esècially when there is more than one source of light! Are you posting this on LinkedIn?

Hi Eve. I haven't posted this on LinkedIn as it's for the DA folks mainly. Ive still got a bit of learning for light, but have a substantial amount of info that can get any beginner / intermediate artists up to a good level :)

My first thought: Awesome!
My second thought: How much will it cost ^^;

And I'd like to understand more about how monitors can display colors differently and the best way to calibrate a monitor yourself. =)

A very valid question.. Price-point is $87.00 USD, Im aiming for around 8hours of tuition, video format. Color calibration isn't something I was thinking of covering, but may be something that I could include for the 'formatting for print' section. Very helpful comment, truly appreciated :)

Quite welcome. Will you have it like once a month or how will that work? I have to get a tablet for school so I'm saving for that right now ^^; but I'd be really interested in this. Have you considered maybe having a set # of "scholarships" or offering the class as prize for some of the contest(s) around here? That'd give people who can't afford it a chance to participate and would help get the word out about it. Just a thought. =)

It will be the whole lot in one go, a big ol' download :D

I might do contests, that's definitely an idea :)

I imagine you must have it covered under Cores skills and Compositing, but colour management is something of a nuisance issue that doesn't always get the attention that it deserves. And it can have definite detrimental effects to an artists work.

I love your in-depth tutorials. Always clear and informative even for those of us that don't work in Photoshop.:)

Thanks so much for the kind words :) Colour management has come up again, interesting. I'll definitely put more focus on this aspect, since it's been mentioned a few times. Appreciate the comment :)
