Photomanip Tutorials that You're Never Shown..

Journal Entry: Sat Nov 10, 2012, 5:05 AM
Breaking the Mould..

There's a butt-load of Photoshop Tutorial sites out there, covering how-to's on a wide range of software techniques.. How many of them get into the nitty gritty of fine-art though? Photoshop is a great tool, but it's just that - a tool. With SurrealPSD we want to go beyond the software, and use fine-art techniques from natural media  in the creation of better art.

Some of the topics we enjoy include Lighting, Scale, Composition, Depth of Field, Colour Theory and more. We've just undergone a huge overhaul of our category system, so for your convenience - here's a lineup of our tutorials and articles:

I'm just managing to scrape a daily living together writing tutorials and in my experience, lots and lots people don't really want to know about technique and how to produce a professional looking work of art. All they want is follow steps (accompanied by cartoons on how to press a key or how to find something on the menu), and come up with a nice picture at the end of it because they can't think of one themselves ... Sad but true.

I had my work turned down by one tutorial provider because, and I quote: "Your tutorials are brilliant, well written with understated and elegant humour. However, we think they are too difficult for our readers, they are not here to learn but to create a nice image."

I was in hysterics for about 10 minutes and then dropped the email in the bin. I didn't answer because I didn't know how to without becoming "inelegant".

I love your tutorials, it's such an eye opener to see how someone else goes about getting a result. So, keep them coming

Caz.

Appreciate the comment Caz. Other tutorial providers are taking that standpoint; however readers can be swayed toward the right way of thinking. That's why Im going to win ;)

Our free tutorials are better than the paid ones at the membership sites, and constitutes an entire learning philosophy for digital art. Im not going to write for other providers, everything is self-hosted and self-initiated.

It's awesome getting this insight from you - where do you publish yours? :)

Hiya Dean,

Thanks for your reply. At the moment my tutorials are published by PSDFan [link]. It's an English site. Tom (the editor) is a nice guy and he's not one of those I mentioned in my previous message. He also pays very well :).

I'm still forwarding people to your site for the basic stuff, such as layer masks and the pen tool. They seem to like it. There was one American girl who watched your pen tutorial. She sent me an email asking where I found you and that your accent is sooooo sexy. LOL. Don't get all hot and bothered though, I think she's only about 14. :D

 Caz.

Kool looking tutorial site, kudos for getting the work in. I know first hand these things are very challenging to do 8-)

Had a couple of comments about that.. Maybe that's my unique selling proposition

, nowt wrong with your selling ermmm bits, but your accent deffo has an advantage. For us Europeans it's not a big deal (I have been told I sound like a posh brummie, possibly because I lived in Warwick for 20 years, hence the Midlands accent) but for American people an English accent is very enticing.
